Abermain is a small town in New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 20 km north of Newcastle and has a population of around 10,000 people. Abermain is famous for its coal mining history and its association with the Australian Labor Party. Coal mining began in Abermain in the 1860s and the town quickly became a major centre of the industry. The town's coal mines were owned by the Australian Coal and Shale Employees' Federation (ACSE), which was a powerful union. The ACSE was closely associated with the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and many of its members were active in the ALP. In 1929, the Great Depression hit Australia and the ACSE was forced to close many of its mines. This led to widespread unemployment in Abermain and many people were forced to leave the town. The ALP was also badly affected by the Depression and its support declined. In the 1930s, the ALP began to rebuild its support in Abermain and the town became a stronghold of the party. In 1941, Ben Chifley, a former coal miner from Abermain, was elected Prime Minister of Australia. Chifley was a strong supporter of the ALP and his election was a major boost for the party in Abermain. In the 1940s and 1950s, Abermain continued to be a major centre of coal mining. The town's mines were owned by the Australian Coal Industry Tribunal (ACIT) and the ACIT was closely associated with the ALP. The ALP was the dominant political party in Abermain and many of its members were active in the ACIT. In the 1960s, the coal mining industry in Abermain began to decline. The town's mines were closed one by one and many people were forced to leave the town. The ALP also lost its dominance in Abermain and its support declined. In the 1970s, the last of Abermain's coal mines closed. The town's population declined and many of its buildings were abandoned. The ALP continued to lose support in Abermain and the town became a stronghold of the Liberal Party. Today, Abermain is a small town with a population of around 10,000 people. The town's economy is based on tourism and light industry. Abermain is still famous for its coal mining history and its association with the Australian Labor Party.
