Herbert Henry Asquith, 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith KG, KT, PC, FRS (12 September 1852 – 14 February 1928) was a British Liberal politician and statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. Asquith was born in Morley, West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of a wealthy barrister. He was educated at the City of London School and Balliol College, Oxford. After graduating, he was called to the bar in 1876 and practised law for a number of years. In 1886, Asquith entered Parliament as Liberal MP for East Fife. He quickly rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party and served as Home Secretary (1892–95), Chancellor of the Exchequer (1905–1908) and Prime Minister (1908–16). Asquith's premiership was a time of great change and upheaval for Britain. He oversaw the passage of the People's Budget (1909), which introduced a number of progressive reforms, including the introduction of income tax on the wealthy. He also led Britain into World War I in 1914. Asquith's premiership was ultimately brought to an end by the outbreak of World War I. He was forced to resign in 1916 after a series of disagreements with his Cabinet colleagues over the conduct of the war. He was succeeded by David Lloyd George. After leaving office, Asquith remained active in politics and served as Leader of the Opposition (1916–18) and Lord President of the Council (1918–21). He died in 1928 at the age of 75.
