Joseph Benedict Chifley (June 22, 1885 – June 13, 1951) was an Australian politician who served as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia from 1945 to 1949. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP), and served as Treasurer from 1941 to 1945. Chifley was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, to Irish Catholic parents. He left school at the age of 13 to work in a local grocery store. In 1910, he moved to Sydney and became involved in the trade union movement. He was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in 1917, and served as Minister for Railways from 1928 to 1929. In 1941, Chifley was elected as Deputy Leader of the ALP, and became Treasurer when John Curtin became Prime Minister. Chifley played a key role in the Australian war effort, and was responsible for the introduction of the Chifley Labor Government's post-war reconstruction program. In 1945, Chifley succeeded Curtin as Prime Minister. His government introduced a number of significant reforms, including the nationalization of the banks, the introduction of a national health insurance scheme, and the establishment of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. Chifley's government was also responsible for the negotiation of the peace treaty with Japan. He retired from politics in 1949, and died in 1951. Chifley is considered one of the most important figures in Australian history. He was a key architect of the Australian welfare state, and his government's reforms laid the foundation for Australia's post-war prosperity. He is also remembered for his role in the negotiation of the peace treaty with Japan, which helped to ensure a peaceful and stable Asia-Pacific region. Chifley is also famous for his famous quote, "The light on the hill". In a speech to the ALP National Conference in 1949, Chifley said: "The light on the hill is a beacon for us all. It is a guiding light which will never fail us. Let us all strive to reach that light, and to make Australia a better place for all." Chifley's "light on the hill" speech is often cited as an example of his commitment to social justice and his vision for a better Australia.
