Gordon Parks was an American photographer, photojournalist, film director, actor, and musician. He is best known for his work for Life magazine, where he documented the lives of everyday people, especially African Americans. Parks was also a pioneer in the use of photography to promote social change. Parks was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1912. He grew up in poverty and experienced racism firsthand. After graduating from high school, Parks moved to Chicago, where he worked as a pianist and a janitor. In 1937, he was hired by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) as a photographer. For the FSA, Parks documented the lives of poor farmers and sharecroppers during the Great Depression. In 1942, Parks joined the staff of Life magazine. He worked for Life for 20 years, during which time he produced some of his most famous photographs. These include "American Gothic," a portrait of a black farmer and his wife; "The Death of a Soldier," a photograph of a black soldier who was killed in the Korean War; and "The White House, Washington, D.C.," a photograph of President Lyndon B. Johnson and his family. In addition to his work as a photographer, Parks was also a filmmaker. He directed several films, including "The Learning Tree" (1969), a coming-of-age story about a black boy growing up in Kansas; "Shaft" (1971), a blaxploitation film about a private detective; and "Leadbelly" (1976), a biopic about the blues musician Huddie Ledbetter. Parks also wrote several books, including "A Choice of Weapons" (1966), an autobiography; and "The Man with a Camera" (1979), a collection of essays on photography. Parks died in New York City in 2006 at the age of 93. He was a pioneering photographer who used his work to document the lives of everyday people and to promote social change.
