Isabella Plains is a 3,500-hectare (8,600-acre) nature reserve located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of the town of Deniliquin, and 500 kilometres (310 mi) south-west of Sydney. The reserve is renowned for its diverse range of flora and fauna, including a number of threatened species. Isabella Plains is also home to a number of significant Aboriginal cultural sites. The reserve was first proclaimed in 1966, and was subsequently extended in 1983. It is managed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service. Isabella Plains is part of the Riverina Region Important Bird Area, identified as such by BirdLife International because of its importance for the conservation of a number of bird species. The reserve is characterised by a variety of habitats, including woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and riverine forest. The woodlands are dominated by eucalypts, such as red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), river red gum (E. tereticornis) and white box (E. albens). The grasslands are home to a variety of native grasses, such as kangaroo grass (Themeda australis) and wallaby grass (Austrodanthonia caespitosa). The wetlands include a number of billabongs and swamps, which provide important habitat for a variety of aquatic birds and animals. The riverine forest is dominated by river oak (Casuarina cunninghamiana) and black wattle (Acacia mearnsii). Isabella Plains is home to a wide variety of fauna, including a number of threatened species. Some of the threatened species found in the reserve include the regent honeyeater (Anthochaera phrygia), the spotted-tailed quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) and the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis).
