William Matthew Flinders Petrie (3 June 1853 – 28 July 1942) was an English Egyptologist and archaeologist who is considered to be the "Father of Egyptology". He was the first to use scientific methods to study Egyptian antiquities, and his work helped to establish the discipline of Egyptology as a serious academic field. Petrie was born in Charlton, Kent, England. He was the son of a clergyman, and he showed an early interest in history and archaeology. He studied at King's College London, where he earned a degree in mathematics. After graduating, Petrie taught mathematics at a school in Brighton. In 1880, he met the Egyptologist Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt Rivers, who encouraged him to study Egyptology. Petrie's first trip to Egypt was in 1880. In 1883, he founded the Egypt Exploration Fund (now known as the Egypt Exploration Society), which funded his future excavations. Petrie was a prolific excavator, and he discovered many important Egyptian artifacts. He also made significant contributions to the study of Egyptian hieroglyphs. His work helped to establish the chronology of ancient Egypt, and he was the first to identify the Hyksos as a foreign dynasty.
