William Matthew Flinders Petrie (3 June 1853 – 28 July 1942) was an English Egyptologist and archaeologist who is considered to be the "Father of Egyptology". Petrie was born in Charlton, Kent, England. He was the son of a clergyman, and he showed an early interest in history and archaeology. His work helped to establish the chronology of ancient Egypt, and he was the first to identify the Hyksos as a foreign dynasty.
