Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was a British statesman and Liberal Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895. He was also Foreign Secretary from 1886 to 1892 and Leader of the Liberal Party from 1894 to 1896. Rosebery was born in London in 1847. He was the eldest son of Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery, and Hannah Rothschild. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Rosebery entered politics. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1868 and served as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1873 to 1874. In 1880, he was appointed Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's first government. He served in this position until 1885, when he resigned over Gladstone's support for Irish Home Rule. In 1892, Rosebery returned to government as Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's second government. He remained in this position until Gladstone's retirement in 1894. Rosebery then succeeded Gladstone as Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party. Rosebery's premiership was a period of political instability. The Liberal Party was divided over the issue of Irish Home Rule, and Rosebery was unable to unite the party behind his leadership. In 1895, the Liberals were defeated in a general election, and Rosebery resigned as Prime Minister. After leaving office, Rosebery remained active in politics. He served as Leader of the Liberal Party until 1896, and he continued to speak out on public issues. He died in London in 1929.
