José de San Martín (February 25, 1778 – August 17, 1850) was an Argentine general and the leader of the successful struggle for independence in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. He is considered one of the most important figures in Latin American history. San Martín was born in Yapeyú, in the Viceroyalty of Río de la Plata, to a Spanish military officer and an Argentine Creole woman. He joined the Spanish army at a young age and fought in the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he returned to Argentina and became involved in the movement for independence. In 1812, San Martín led the Army of the North in a campaign against the Spanish forces in Upper Peru (now Bolivia). However, the campaign was unsuccessful and San Martín was forced to retreat to Argentina. In 1814, he proposed a plan to liberate Chile from Spanish rule by crossing the Andes Mountains. The plan was approved and, in 1817, San Martín led an army of 4,000 men across the Andes and defeated the Spanish forces at the Battle of Chacabuco. In 1818, San Martín led the Chilean army to victory at the Battle of Maipú, which effectively secured Chile's independence. He then turned his attention to Peru, which was the last major Spanish stronghold in South America. In 1820, San Martín landed in Peru and led the Peruvian army to victory at the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824. This victory effectively ended Spanish rule in Peru and throughout South America. After the liberation of Peru, San Martín retired from military service and moved to Europe. He died in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, in 1850. San Martín is considered a hero in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. He is remembered for his military leadership and his role in the liberation of South America from Spanish rule. He is also known for his commitment to social justice and his belief in the equality of all people. In addition to his military achievements, San Martín was also a talented diplomat and a gifted statesman. He was instrumental in the formation of the United Provinces of South America (which later became Argentina) and the Republic of Chile.
