Saturnino Mariano Laspiur (1857–1929) was a Filipino educator, journalist, and politician. He was the first Filipino to become the director of the University of the Philippines and the first Filipino to serve as the secretary of public instruction of the Philippines. Laspiur was born in Jaro, Iloilo in 1857. He studied at the Colegio de San José in Manila and graduated with a degree in law from the University of Santo Tomas in 1881. He then taught at the Colegio de San José and the University of Santo Tomas. In 1889, he co-founded the La Solidaridad, a newspaper that advocated for reforms in the Spanish colonial government of the Philippines. In 1898, Laspiur was appointed as the director of the University of the Philippines. He served in this position until 1901, when he resigned to join the Philippine Revolution against Spain. After the war, he served as the secretary of public instruction of the Philippines from 1901 to 1906. In this role, he oversaw the establishment of the public school system in the Philippines. Laspiur was also a member of the Malolos Congress, which drafted the first constitution of the Philippines. He was also a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, where he represented the Philippines' claim to the territories of Sabah and Sarawak. Laspiur died in Manila in 1929. He is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Philippine education. He is also known for his contributions to the Philippine Revolution and the establishment of the Philippine public school system.
