Tepelenë is a town and municipality in Gjirokastër County, southern Albania. It is the seat of the Tepelenë District and has a population of 27,442 at the 2011 census. Tepelenë is situated in the valley of the Tepelena River, in the foothills of the Ceraunian Mountains. The town is known for its Ottoman-era architecture, including the Tepelenë Castle and the Ali Pasha Mosque. Tepelenë was founded in the 15th century as a small village. In the 17th century, it became the seat of the Tepelenë Sanjak, a sub-province of the Ottoman Empire.
