What is point of view in literature?

Point of view in literature is a narrative technique used to tell a story. It involves the narrator’s perspective in which the events of a story are told. Point of view can be classified into three main categories: first-person, second-person, and third-person. Each of these have distinct advantages and drawbacks, which can change the way a story is perceived.

First-person point of view is the most common in literature, and consists of the narrator speaking from their own perspective. This allows the reader to gain insight into the narrator’s thoughts and feelings. It also allows for a more personal connection between the narrator and the reader, as the reader is directly experiencing the story as if they were the narrator. However, this point of view can be limiting as the reader is only able to gain insight into the narrator’s thoughts and feelings, not those of other characters.

Second-person point of view is less common, but can be powerful when used effectively. This point of view involves the narrator speaking directly to the reader. This allows the reader to be part of the story and can create a sense of urgency and immediacy. However, it can be difficult to maintain this point of view if the story is long and complex, as the reader may begin to feel disconnected from the narrator.

Third-person point of view is the least common in literature. This point of view involves the narrator speaking from a neutral perspective, without directly addressing the reader. This allows the reader to gain an objective view of the story and the characters, as well as a more comprehensive understanding of the events taking place. However, it can be difficult to create a strong connection between the reader and the characters, as the reader is not experiencing the story from their perspective.

No matter which point of view is used, it is important to keep in mind that each has its own advantages and drawbacks. Choosing the right point of view for a story can have a significant impact on how the story is perceived by the reader.
