Abou El Hassan (c. 1085 – 1160) was a Berber Almoravid general and statesman who served as the fourth Emir of Morocco from 1147 to 1160. He is best known for his conquest of Al-Andalus, which he ruled as a vassal of the Almoravid caliph in Marrakesh. Abou El Hassan was born in Sijilmasa, Morocco, to a Berber family of the Masmuda tribe. He joined the Almoravid movement as a young man and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1147, he was appointed Emir of Morocco by the Almoravid caliph, Ali ibn Yusuf. Abou El Hassan immediately set about consolidating his power in Morocco. He crushed a rebellion by the Zenata Berbers and defeated the Marinids at the Battle of Al-Uyun. He also extended Almoravid control into the Sahara, subduing the Sanhaja Berbers of the Western Sahara. In 1149, Abou El Hassan invaded Al-Andalus, which was at the time ruled by the Almohads. He captured the cities of Seville, Córdoba, and Toledo, and by 1157, he had conquered most of the Almohad realm. Abou El Hassan's conquest of Al-Andalus was a major turning point in the history of the region. It marked the end of Almohad rule and the beginning of a period of instability that would last for centuries. It also led to the rise of the Christian kingdoms of Castile and Aragon, which would eventually conquer all of Al-Andalus. Abou El Hassan died in 1160 at the age of 75. He was succeeded by his son, Youssef ibn Tashfin. Abou El Hassan is remembered as one of the greatest Almoravid rulers. He was a brilliant military commander and a skilled statesman.
