Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 – September 13, 1881) was a career United States Army officer and politician who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is best known for his disastrous defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Burnside's military career began during the Mexican-American War, where he served as a lieutenant in the 1st Rhode Island Infantry. He was also the president of the National Rifle Association from 1875 to 1877. Burnside died in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1881. He is buried in Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
