Ambrose Everett Burnside (May 23, 1824 – September 13, 1881) was a career United States Army officer and politician who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He is best known for his disastrous defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Burnside's military career began during the Mexican-American War, where he served as a lieutenant in the 1st Rhode Island Infantry. He later served as a state legislator in Rhode Island and as the state's governor from 1866 to 1869. Burnside was a staunch Republican and an opponent of slavery. He was one of the first Union generals to recruit African-American soldiers into the Union Army. Burnside was appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac in November 1862, after the resignation of George B. McClellan. Burnside remained in the army until the end of the war, but he never again held a major command. After the war, Burnside served as the United States minister to France from 1869 to 1871. He was also the president of the National Rifle Association from 1875 to 1877. Burnside died in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 1881. He is buried in Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
