Contraalmirante Cordero (1884-1964) was a Chilean naval officer who served as Chief of the General Staff of the Chilean Navy from 1938 to 1941. He is best known for his role in the Battle of Iquique during the War of the Pacific, in which he led the Chilean Navy to victory over the Peruvian Navy. Cordero was born in Valparaíso, Chile, in 1884. He joined the Chilean Navy in 1900 and quickly rose through the ranks. He served in a variety of positions, including as commander of the Chilean cruiser Almirante Cochrane and as Chief of the General Staff of the Chilean Navy. In 1910, Cordero was appointed commander of the Chilean cruiser Almirante Cochrane. In this role, he led the Chilean Navy to victory over the Peruvian Navy in the Battle of Iquique. The Battle of Iquique was a decisive victory for Chile and helped to secure Chilean control of the nitrate-rich region of Tarapacá. After the Battle of Iquique, Cordero continued to serve in a variety of positions within the Chilean Navy.
