Herbert Vere Evatt (30 March 1894 – 2 November 1965) was an Australian politician, jurist, and diplomat. He served as the sixth Prime Minister of Australia from 1941 to 1945 and as a Justice of the International Court of Justice from 1947 to 1970. Evatt was born in Balmain, New South Wales, to a working-class family. He attended the University of Sydney, where he studied law and became involved in student politics. After graduating, he worked as a barrister and solicitor before entering politics. Evatt was elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 1929, representing the Labor Party.
