Reginald Farrer (1880 – 1920) was an English plant hunter, explorer and writer. He was born in Clapham, London, the son of Thomas Farrer, a barrister. Farrer was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a keen botanist from an early age, and spent his holidays exploring the countryside around his home in Surrey. After graduating from Oxford, Farrer worked as a schoolmaster for a short time, but he soon gave up this career to devote himself to plant hunting. In 1904, he travelled to China with his friend George Forrest, and together they made several expeditions to the mountains of Yunnan. During these expeditions, they discovered many new species of plants, including the blue poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia), which is now Farrer's most famous find. Farrer returned to China several times, and he also made expeditions to other parts of the world, including Japan, India, and Tibet. He wrote extensively about his travels, and his books are still considered classics of travel writing. Farrer died in 1920, at the age of 40, from pneumonia. He is buried in the churchyard of St Mary's Church in Abinger, Surrey. Farrer is considered one of the greatest plant hunters of all time. He was responsible for the introduction of many new species of plants to the West, and his work has had a profound impact on the development of horticulture. He was also a gifted writer, and his books are a valuable source of information about the natural history of the places he visited. In addition to his work as a plant hunter, Farrer was also a talented artist. He made many drawings and paintings of the plants he discovered, and these are now housed in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Farrer was a complex and contradictory figure. He was a brilliant botanist and a gifted writer, but he was also a difficult and eccentric man. He was often plagued by ill health, and he died at a relatively young age. Despite his personal problems, Farrer's contributions to the world of botany and travel writing are undeniable. He is a true Renaissance man, and his legacy will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
