Howard Walter Florey, OM, CH, FRS, FRCP (24 September 1898 – 21 February 1968) was an Australian pathologist and Nobel Prize laureate noted for his role in the development of penicillin. Florey was born in Adelaide, South Australia, and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide. He then moved to England to continue his studies at the University of Oxford, where he was appointed a lecturer in pathology in 1926. In 1928, Florey met Ernst Chain, a German scientist who had recently fled to England to escape Nazi persecution. Chain had been working on the development of penicillin, and he and Florey began collaborating on the project. In 1939, they successfully isolated penicillin from a mould, and they began to test its effectiveness in treating infections. During World War II, Florey and Chain worked with the British military to develop penicillin into a practical treatment for wounded soldiers. In 1943, they successfully treated a patient with fatal septicaemia with penicillin, and the drug was soon being used to treat wounded soldiers on a large scale. After the war, Florey returned to Oxford, where he continued his research into penicillin and other antibiotics. He also served as the President of the Royal Society from 1960 to 1965. Florey died in Oxford in 1968. Florey is considered one of the pioneers of modern antibiotics, and his work has saved countless lives. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945, along with Chain and Alexander Fleming, who had discovered penicillin in 1928.
