General Acha (1790-1865) was an Argentine military leader and politician who played a significant role in the country's independence struggle and early history. He was born in the province of Buenos Aires and joined the Spanish army at an early age. He fought in the wars against the British and the Portuguese, and later against the independence movements in Peru and Chile. In 1816, Acha returned to Argentina and joined the forces of José de San Martín, who was leading the struggle for independence from Spain. He fought in the Battle of Chacabuco in 1817, which was a decisive victory for the independence forces. He also fought in the Battle of Maipú in 1818, which secured the independence of Chile. After the independence of Chile, Acha returned to Argentina and served as governor of the province of Mendoza from 1820 to 1822. He then served as minister of war in the government of Bernardino Rivadavia from 1826 to 1827. In 1833, Acha was elected governor of the province of Buenos Aires. He served in this position until 1835, when he was overthrown by Juan Manuel de Rosas. Acha then went into exile in Montevideo, where he remained until Rosas was overthrown in 1852. After Rosas's fall, Acha returned to Argentina and served as governor of the province of Buenos Aires from 1852 to 1853. He then served as minister of war in the government of Justo José de Urquiza from 1854 to 1859. Acha died in Buenos Aires in 1865.
