Enrique Mosconi (1877–1940) was an Argentine engineer and politician who served as Minister of Public Works from 1922 to 1928 and as President of the Argentine State Oil Company (YPF) from 1922 to 1930. He is best known for his role in the nationalization of the Argentine oil industry and for his efforts to develop the country's petroleum resources. Mosconi was born in Buenos Aires in 1877. He studied engineering at the University of Buenos Aires, graduating in 1900. He then worked for the Argentine National Railways for several years before joining the Ministry of Public Works in 1911. In 1922, he was appointed Minister of Public Works by President Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear. As Minister of Public Works, Mosconi oversaw the construction of several major infrastructure projects, including the Buenos Aires–Rosario Highway and the Central Argentine Railway. He also played a key role in the nationalization of the Argentine oil industry in 1922. Mosconi believed that the country's oil resources were a national asset and that they should be developed for the benefit of all Argentines. In 1922, Mosconi founded the Argentine State Oil Company (YPF) to oversee the development of the country's oil industry. Under Mosconi's leadership, YPF quickly became one of the largest oil companies in Latin America. Mosconi also established a number of schools and training programs to develop the skills of Argentine oil workers. Mosconi's efforts to develop the Argentine oil industry were met with opposition from foreign oil companies, who feared that the nationalization of the industry would hurt their profits. In 1930, a military coup overthrew the government of President Hipólito Yrigoyen and Mosconi was forced to resign from YPF. He died in Buenos Aires in 1940. Mosconi is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the Argentine oil industry. He is credited with playing a key role in the nationalization of the industry and with developing YPF into one of the largest oil companies in Latin America. He is also remembered for his efforts to promote the development of Argentina's petroleum resources for the benefit of all Argentines.
