Justiniano Posse (1858–1924) was a prominent Argentine sculptor who is best known for his monumental works in public spaces, including the monument to General José de San Martín in Buenos Aires and the statue of Christopher Columbus in Barcelona. Posse was born in Buenos Aires to a family of Italian immigrants. He studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Juan Bautista Alberdi. After graduating, Posse traveled to Europe, where he studied with the sculptors Auguste Rodin and Jules Dalou. Posse returned to Argentina in 1887 and began to receive commissions for public sculptures. His first major work was the monument to General José de San Martín, which was completed in 1897 and is located in the Plaza San Martín in Buenos Aires. The monument is a bronze statue of San Martín on horseback, and it is considered one of Posse's most important works. In 1904, Posse was commissioned to create a statue of Christopher Columbus for the city of Barcelona. The statue, which is located in the Plaza de Colón, is a bronze figure of Columbus standing on a globe. It is considered one of Posse's most famous works.
