Mount Vernon is the plantation home of George Washington, the first President of the United States. Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, on the banks of the Potomac River, Mount Vernon is one of the most visited historical sites in the United States. The estate was built by George Washington in 1757 and served as his home for the rest of his life. Washington inherited the property from his father, Augustine Washington, in 1743. He began construction on the house in 1757 and it was completed in 1775. The house is a Georgian-style structure with five-bays across the front. It is made of brick and has a hipped roof. The interior of the house is furnished with period pieces and contains many of Washington's personal belongings. Mount Vernon was the center of Washington's political and social life. He entertained guests from all over the world at Mount Vernon, including the Marquis de Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. Washington also used Mount Vernon as a base of operations during the American Revolution. He led the Continental Army from Mount Vernon and returned there after the war to retire. After Washington's death in 1799, Mount Vernon was inherited by his nephew, Bushrod Washington. Bushrod Washington died in 1829 and left Mount Vernon to his adopted daughter, Nelly Custis Lewis. Nelly Custis Lewis died in 1852 and left Mount Vernon to her son, George Washington Parke Custis. George Washington Parke Custis died in 1857 and left Mount Vernon to his adopted daughter, Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee. Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee married Robert E. Lee in 1831 and they lived at Mount Vernon for many years. After the American Civil War, Robert E. Lee sold Mount Vernon to the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association has owned and operated Mount Vernon since 1860. They have restored the house and grounds to their appearance during Washington's lifetime. Mount Vernon is open to the public and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States. Mount Vernon is famous for many reasons.
