Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author (described in his own day as a "natural philosopher"). While at Cambridge, Newton developed his interest in mathematics and physics. He also began to develop his theory of universal gravitation. In 1665, the Great Plague forced the closure of Cambridge, and Newton returned home to Woolsthorpe. In 1667, Newton returned to Cambridge and was elected a fellow of Trinity College. He continued his work on mathematics and physics, and in 1687 he published the Principia Mathematica. This work laid the foundation for classical mechanics and is considered one of the most important scientific works ever published. In addition to his work in mathematics and physics, Newton also made important contributions to optics. He developed the reflecting telescope, and he discovered that white light is composed of a mixture of colors. Newton was also a theologian and a philosopher. He wrote extensively on these subjects, and his work had a significant impact on both fields. Newton died in London on March 31, 1727. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
