Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was an English mathematician, physicist, astronomer, theologian, and author (described in his own day as a "natural philosopher"). He is widely recognised as one of the most influential scientists of all time, and a key figure in the scientific revolution. His book Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica ("Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy"), first published in 1687, laid the foundation for classical mechanics. Newton also made seminal contributions to optics, and shares credit with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz for developing infinitesimal calculus. In addition to his work in mathematics and physics, Newton also made important contributions to astronomy, including the development of the three-body problem and the discovery of the law of universal gravitation. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, England, on January 4, 1643. His father, a farmer, died three months before he was born. Newton was raised by his mother, who remarried when he was three years old. He attended the King's School in Grantham, where he showed a talent for mathematics. In 1661, he entered Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. While at Cambridge, Newton developed his interest in mathematics and physics. He also began to develop his theory of universal gravitation. In 1665, the Great Plague forced the closure of Cambridge, and Newton returned home to Woolsthorpe. During this time, he made some of his most important discoveries, including the development of calculus and the laws of motion. In 1667, Newton returned to Cambridge and was elected a fellow of Trinity College. He continued his work on mathematics and physics, and in 1687 he published the Principia Mathematica. This work laid the foundation for classical mechanics and is considered one of the most important scientific works ever published. In addition to his work in mathematics and physics, Newton also made important contributions to optics. He developed the reflecting telescope, and he discovered that white light is composed of a mixture of colors. Newton was also a theologian and a philosopher. He wrote extensively on these subjects, and his work had a significant impact on both fields. Newton died in London on March 31, 1727. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. Newton's work had a profound impact on the development of science. His laws of motion and theory of universal gravitation laid the foundation for classical mechanics, and his work in optics paved the way for the development of modern physics. Newton's work also had a significant impact on philosophy, and his ideas about space, time, and causality continue to be debated today. Newton is widely regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time. His work has had a lasting impact on the development of science, and his ideas continue to inspire and challenge scientists today.
