Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, KT, GCVO, PC (7 May 1847 – 21 May 1929), styled Viscount Dalmeny until 1868, was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1894 to 1895. He was also Foreign Secretary from 1886 to 1892 and Leader of the Liberal Party from 1894 to 1896. Rosebery was born in London, the eldest son of Archibald Primrose, 4th Earl of Rosebery, and Hannah Moncrieff. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, he entered politics and was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) in 1868. He served as Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1873 to 1874 and as Secretary of State for India from 1880 to 1884. In 1886, Rosebery became Foreign Secretary in Gladstone's third government. He played a leading role in the negotiation of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale of 1887, which marked a significant improvement in relations between the two countries. In 1892, Rosebery succeeded Gladstone as Prime Minister. His government introduced a number of social reforms, including the Workmen's Compensation Act of 1897, but it was unable to resolve the Irish Question. Rosebery resigned as Prime Minister in 1895 and retired from politics in 1896. After leaving politics, Rosebery devoted himself to writing and philanthropy. He was a major patron of the arts and a founder of the National Trust. He died in London in 1929. Rosebery was a complex and contradictory figure.
